Disarm (Xylophone IV), Pedro Reyes
Acquisition for Brooklyn Museum, 2013
The Brooklyn Museum purchased Disarm (Xylophone IV) in 2013. In this series, Reyes transformed government confiscated firearms into musical instruments. It connects to similar projects he has done worldwide. This piece was exhibited as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s site specific installation in the Grand Hall in observation of national Gun Violence Awareness Month in the summer of 2016.
Pedro Reyes (born 1972, Mexico) uses sculpture, architecture, installation, video, performance and audience participation to increase awareness and as an agent of change in social, environmental and educational situations. He was named a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow in 2015. His extensive exhibition history includes Creative Time, NYC, 9th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, Evento, Bordeaux Biennnale, France, Festival of Ideas for a New City, New Museum, NY, MARTA Herford, Germany, Bienale of the Americas, Denver, Colorado, Ballroom of Marfa, Texas, Reykjiavik Art Museum, Artissts Space, NY., and the Serpentine Gallery, London, among others around the world.
